We’ve reported bits and pieces of news over time on the upcoming Hyundai Kona, promising to update you as more information became available. And here we are again, as the newest Hyundai SUV took a bow — in production form — at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Here’s what we know ahead of its arrival at Kearny Mesa Hyundai.
First, let’s recap what we knew before now.
- Release Date: First quarter of 2018
- Seating: Five passengers
- Class: Subcompact crossover
- Platform: Shared with Europe-only Hyundai i20
Now let’s move on to the interesting stuff. Frankfurt is our first close look at the interior and exterior after numerous teaser shots. The styling is bold but not polarizing. This new crossover looks thoroughly modern, make no mistake, but it’s modernism deployed with a light hand, from the color palette to the two-tone roof to the well-balanced sense of proportion. Aside from the grille and badge, it’s also a departure from the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe.
We’re also keeping an eye on Hyundai Smart Stream powertrain. It starts with a new turbocharged Smart Stream T-GDi engine that displaces 1.6 liters and incorporates CVVD, or Continuously Variable Valve Duration, for improved fuel economy. A further assist comes from the Smart Stream eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with its fast and smooth gear changes.
The Hyundai KONA is only one of many changes in the offing for the Hyundai Motor Company. The SUV’s unveiling more or less coincides with the naming of Kyung Soo (Kenny) Lee as the company’s new CEO. Mr. Lee’s mandate, in part, is to make his company more competitive in the rapidly-growing crossover segment. With the new Hyundai Kona, he’s off to a good start.
