When the Hyundai Accent came out in 1994, it had some big shoes to fill. It was replacing the Hyundai Excel, which was the company’s first — and for a little while, only — car available in the United States. This year, the 2018 Hyundai Accent comes to Kearny Mesa Hyundai and reminds us how much has changed over the years.
The Hyundai Accent enters its fifth generation with a comprehensive redesign. The exterior borrows a bit from the larger Hyundai Elantra, and its slightly larger dimensions will mean more cargo and cabin space. The interior gets a better dash layout, available heated seats, and improved fit and finish.
There are some more substantial changes as well. The 132 horsepower 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine should, per the Hyundai Motor Company, show a seven percent boost in fuel economy. A backup camera — unavailable at all on the fourth generation car — is now standard equipment.
Higher trim levels will come equipped with a seven-inch display on the infotainment system, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Automatic Emergency Braking, not usually found in this class, will be available. One thing that won’t be? The Hyundai Accent Hatchback, which is being dropped from the American lineup even though it’ll still be available in other markets.
The Hyundai Accent has always represented a great value for the money. Even though cars are outsold by SUVs these days, we’re glad that Hyundai cars don’t just phone it in. 23 years into its run, it’s clear that this is the best Hyundai Accent yet.
