If you haven’t already heard, we’re excited to share the news that Good Housekeeping and Car and Driver named the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited a winner in its first annual Best New Car Awards. The Sonata Hybrid took home an award in the “eco” category, topping other brands’ green vehicle options, including the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Jane Francisco, editor in chief of Good Housekeeping, pointed to the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s “technology and convenience features like blind spot detection, lane-departure and forward collision warnings.

“The Sonata had the best gas mileage, delivering an incredibly quiet and relaxing ride in our tests,” Francisco said.

That news didn’t necessarily come as a surprise to us at Kearny Mesa Hyundai, your Hyundai dealership in San Diego, or to Mike O’Brien, vice president of product and corporate planning at Hyundai Motor America. According to O’Brien, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s combination of fuel efficiency with a comfortable driving experience is an essential part of the Hybrid’s design and engineering.

Regardless, the award should provide some validation, especially considering that it was given out by top men’s and women’s publications.

“(It) shows the car’s unmatched ability to exceed the needs of customers from different lifestyles,” O’Brien said.

Good Housekeeping, a magazine that targets a predominantly female audience, partnered with Car and Driver, which is kind of like the Bible for everything automotive, in order to select the winners of the Best New Car Awards. Together they evaluated attributes like performance, safety features, reliability, usability, storage and intuitive design. They even considered things as relatively small as cup holders and as big as overall price to determine their top makes and models.

So what else factored into the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited’s win? Good Housekeeping and Car and Driver also liked the Sonata Hybrid’s hands-free trunk and leather-wrapped heated steering wheel. But of course, most importantly, this new Hyundai hybrid bested 40 other vehicles for best gas mileage. When you’re buying a hybrid vehicle, that’s pretty important, right? Of course, features like a 5-inch color touchscreen audio display don’t hurt either.
